The Grand Opening of the Cairo Monorail

The New Administrative Capital Monorail, the first of two lines in Egypt’s Cairo Monorail system, are now open. Also known as the East Nile Monorail, the electric, driverless monorail line runs for approximately 56 km from East Cairo to the New Administrative City. The line features 22 stations and a depot.

With convenient, reliable, comfortable, and fast passenger transit, the East Nile Monorail delivers enhanced connectivity across Greater Cairo. Passengers can transfer to Line 3 of the Cairo Metro at the East Nile Monorail’s western terminus, Stadium Station. The line also connects passengers with the Cairo Light Rail Transit system at Almasa Hotel Station in the New Administrative Capital. Additionally, by reducing traffic congestion and reliance on automobiles, the megaproject supports Egypt’s broader transition to more sustainable modes of transportation.

Delivering Project Success With Project Management Services

GISI Consulting Group company Hill International provided project management and supervision services for the project, managing the Monorail’s implementation from design through handover. Leveraging our expertise in transit infrastructure, the Hill team helped ensure schedule adherence and the integration of infrastructure and smart transit systems. We also coordinated with the project team and stakeholders and monitored progress to guarantee the highest quality and safety standards.

“We are proud to have contributed to the successful completion of the East Nile Monorail, a megaproject that reflects Egypt’s vision for sustainable development,” says Hill International President Waleed Abdel-Fattah.

According to Waleed, the megaproject faced numerous challenges due to the large scale of the construction works and the complexity of the delivery timelines. The project team addressed these challenges through meticulous planning, the adoption of innovative engineering solutions, and the application of best practices in project management.

Global & Local Collaboration

Close collaboration between Egyptian authorities, international partners, and local teams also contributed to project success. Hill helped facilitate collaboration and enable knowledge exchange and training for local participants.

“Egyptian companies executed major portions of the megaproject alongside international consultants, while government bodies played a vital role in coordinating efforts and overcoming challenges,” explains Waleed. “The team’s collaboration was a key part of the project’s success and proves the capability of Egyptian talent to deliver world-class infrastructure, in Egypt and beyond, with professionalism and precision. We extend our gratitude to the Egyptian government for its trust and continuous support, as well as to the project team’s hard-working engineers and construction staff.”

A Strategic Partner for Egypt’s Megaprojects

Waleed notes that the completion of the East Nile Monorail reinforces Hill’s reputation as a trusted management partner on the most complex projects in Egypt. He references Hill’s role on such high-profile Egyptian projects as the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), which opened earlier this month, and the second, western line of the Cairo Monorail, currently in development.

“We remain committed to contributing to major projects throughout Egypt,” concludes Waleed. “To that end, our company prioritizes collaboration with local and international entities, the capturing of specialized expertise and lessons learned, and the rigorous development of local staff. By enhancing local knowledge, partnering with the right teams, and delivering the high-quality consultancy services for which Hill is known in Egypt and around the world, we aim to continue supporting the state’s vision for sustainable growth.”
