Senior energy and utilities executive brings two decades of experience in strategy, transformation, practice development and large-scale integration across international markets.
GISI Consulting Group has appointed Georg Bäcker as Global Energy & Utilities Consulting Leader, a role focused on developing an integrated global consulting platform for the energy and utilities sector.
Based in Abu Dhabi, Bäcker will support the development of the platform’s strategy, service offerings and go-to-market approach, drawing on capabilities across GISI Consulting Group’s operating companies. The platform is expected to serve clients across North America, the United Kingdom, the Gulf Cooperation Council region and Australia.
“Energy and utility companies worldwide are managing growing capital requirements, rapid technological change, evolving stakeholder expectations and workforce capacity challenges,” explains Derek Amidon, GISI Consulting Group CEO. “Our platform will help clients respond to these pressures by bringing together engineering, program management, advisory and implementation capabilities from across the Group.”
Bäcker brings 20 years of energy and utilities experience spanning Europe, Africa, North America and the Middle East. His background includes corporate strategy, operating-model transformation, governance, utility management consulting, mergers and integrations, capital-program oversight and energy transition strategy. He has worked with executive boards, government entities and investors to translate complex strategic priorities into operating structures, investment decisions and large-scale transformation programs.
Most recently, Bäcker served as Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy at TAQA Distribution in Abu Dhabi, where he developed the organization’s 2030 corporate strategy and established a board-level strategy committee.
Earlier in his career, Bäcker established a well-known utility management consulting practice in North America, developing its market strategy, recruiting its founding team and building a pipeline of potential acquisitions.
In his new position, Bäcker will work with leaders across GISI Consulting Group, Palladium, GEI Consultants, and Hill International to define the platform’s initial service lines and build a coordinated offering for energy and utilities clients.
“GISI Consulting Group’s distinctive business model and growth story are inspiring,” Bäcker says of his decision to join the Group. “Our firms bring deep local knowledge, backed by employee owners who are personally invested in client success. I’m looking forward to channeling those unique strengths to help our utility clients build and operate the critical energy infrastructure our communities depend on.”
Bäcker holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial engineering from Technische Universität Darmstadt. He has also completed executive programs in power-sector reform at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business and executive development at London Business School.
