On December 3, the Zayed National Museum, the official national museum of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), opened to the public. Located in Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District, this institution celebrates the UAE’s rich history and culture while showcasing its commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Designed for History, Culture, and Innovation
Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, the 95,000 square meter museum features six permanent galleries, spaces for temporary exhibitions, and Al Masar Garden, an outdoor gallery highlighting native landscapes and traditional irrigation systems. Inside, visitors can examine more than 1,500 artifacts in immersive installations that explore the UAE’s identity and honor the legacy and values of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the nation’s founding father.
The museum’s architecture blends contemporary design with Emirati traditions. Its signature wing-shaped towers are both striking and a crucial part of the museum’s natural ventilation system that reduces energy use and enhances visitor comfort.
Hill International’s Role
On behalf of the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, GISI Consulting Group company Hill International provided project management and cost consultancy services. Hill coordinated the efforts of a multidisciplinary team to help ensure alignment with international best practices and Abu Dhabi’s vision for the museum. The Hill team also oversaw scheduling, budgeting, quality control, and construction activities, including exhibition installation and fit out.
